Thank you for your interest in Man-CON
Moundsville, West Virginia

Man-CON will be held on Saturday, August 8th and Sunday, August 9th, 2020.  The conference will be held at the Sanford Center and will highlight and feature men in all areas of the paranormal field, not just ghost hunting.

During the course of the weekend, you will have the opportunity to investigate the Haunted Bellaire House and the Sanford Center itself.  You will also have the opportunity to take a daytime tour of the West Virginia State Penitentiary and investigate it as well.  We will also be visiting the Palace of Gold after the conference on both Saturday or Sunday evening, you can choose to go one day or both.

Below is a short history on the locations and below that are the packages we are offering.  We also recommend that you purchase event protection insurance in case there is an emergency and you cannot attend.

West Virginia State Penitentiary

The West Virginia State Penitentiary is not only a prison, but an architectural marvel in itself.  The architectural type is Gothic Revival and it is modeled after the state prison in Joliet, Illinois, but on a smaller scale.  The prison operated from 1876 until 1995.

As the years went by, the conditions of the prison worsened to the point that the US Department of Justice (US DOJ) would rank the prison in the Top Ten Most Violent Correctional Facilities in the country.  This wasn't just due to multiple events that happened, but some of the most violent, heinous crimes to occur inside or outside of prison walls, there were at least 36 know homicides during the time it was open.  The Sugar Shack is where most of the violence occurred, so much to the point that guards refused to go in there for fear of their safety.  The building was supposed to be a recreational room, but it was much, much darker than anyone could imagine--there was gambling, fighting, and rapes happened here.  At one point, a prisoner was beaten so badly he could barely move and either crawled out of The Sugar Shack or was thrown out, but no guard would help him due to retaliation and fear of for their safety--if you take the daytime tour, the guide will tell you about this.

The best known homicide to occur in the prison happened to R.D. Wall on October 8, 1929.  R.D. was on his way to his job in the boiler room when he was jumped by three fellow inmates with dull shivs for being a snitch.  His fingers were cut off and he was decapitated.  His spirit is said to be seen roaming the yard.

Overall, there were 94 men executed between 1899 and 1959.  Until 1949, there were 85 men hung and until June 19, 1931, the hangings were a public event.  What made this change from public to invitation only?  On this date, a man by the name of Frank Hyer was being executed for the murder of his wife.  When the trap door opened and his full weight settled into the noose, he was decapitated.  In 1951, Old Sparky became a fixture at the prison, this is the year that electrocution became the fate of those on death row.  Between 1951 and 1965, when the state prohibited capital punishment, nine men died were put to death in this manner.  The ironic part of this--Old Sparky was built by an inmate.

The Bellaire House

The Bellaire House is one of the most haunted locations in the world according to those who have visited here.  In 2017, Dana Matthews, who writes for Week in Weird, wrote

"For the last few years, there’s been quite a bit of paranormal hype surrounding a little house in Bellaire, Ohio. Rumors suggested that the innocent-looking house sat atop a cursed coal mine situated above a ley-line, and as if straight out of a horror film, was even in the vicinity of sacred Native American burial caves – a trifecta of supernatural forces. Thanks to tales of aggressive spirits and bad luck, some of the locals had even taken to calling the building the “most haunted house on the planet,” which is a pretty lofty claim in a world with Amityville, the LaLaurie House, or even the Rampart Street Murder House.  Still, countless people continue to have so many terrifying, violent experiences in the empty home that it seems only a matter of time before this Ohio haunt cracks the paranormal top ten. Step inside the haunted Bellaire House and decide for yourself.

The Bellaire House had already started to gain a mysterious reputation while sitting abandoned for years. Some neighbors claimed to see people milling around in the house or peeking out of windows, even though the building was locked up tight. Many blamed the sightings on mischievous kids, but when the current owner, Kristin Lee, moved in, it didn’t take long for the activity to manifest in more frightening ways.

The Sanford Center and Archives of the Afterlife Paranormal Museum

The Archives of the Afterlife Museum is world famous and located within the haunted, former Sanford School, the mysterious Archive collection awaits your visit. The museum itself is a portal into a realm where history unites with mystery. The relics help illuminate the correlation of paranormal reports with factual historical representation thru research. The collection showcases a vast array of haunted, historical and cursed items ranging from embalming tables, caskets, idols, an iron bed frame from the Eloise Psychiatric Hospital and even an Execution Cap from the Former West Virginia State Penitentiary which was worn by nine inmates who were subjected to capital punishment thru electrocution. You will also find our “World of Wars” military display housing WWII German Death Cards, War Ravaged German Helmets directly from European battlefields, a BDU top & boots reported to be from a fallen United States Marine during Desert Storm and even a war damaged canteen from the infamous battle of Stalingrad, one of WWII’s most bloodiest battles.

Steve Hummel, the museum founder, also states there are "shadow people, physical touch, disembodied voices, unexplained sounds (doors closing, footsteps,..), light anomalies" in the former school.  We look forward to see what kind of spiritual remnants are left in this location!

Prabhupada's Palace of Gold

The Palace writes,

"Overlooking the Appalachian hills and valleys, Prabhupada's Palace of Gold is reminiscent of an Indian kingdom.

Enjoy leisurely walks through our award winning gardens or sit by the lotus pond and enjoy a smoothie.

Inside, see sunlight colors through thirty-one stained glass windows reflected in crystal chandeliers and mirrored ceilings. Walk upon intricate marble floors and inlaid walls. Fifty-two varieties of marble and onyx imported from Europe, Asia and Africa.

In the Grand Hall hangs a giant French chandelier over 150 years old. Murals depicting ancient Indian classics are painted on the ceiling in the tradition of Renaissance masters. Walls and pillars are accented with semi-precious stones and pure gold. Under the thirty-ton main dome is a 4200 piece crystal ceiling.

Four royal peacock windows display more than 1,500 pieces of hand-crafted stained glass. Peacock and lotus motifs pervade the Palace, etched into numerous windows and carved into doors. Peacocks are traditionally associated with Royalty and Lord Krishna, who wears a peacock feather in His hair.

Prabhupada's Palace of Gold is worth the trip to WV...".
